These simple houses are the earliest known examples of building in Peru, dating from around 2000BC. They were domestic buildings, constructed into the hillside with half the house under the ground and the other half above it. The upper part was built with [G 03 / adobe] blocks, a light building material. The lower part was lined with [G 06 / basalt] blocks and the floor was hardened with clay.
From the remains that have been found in these ruins, it was possible that the people who built them had some kind of burial ceremony. Bodies were wrapped tightly in cloth and buried surrounded by jewelry made from stone or bone, beads and gourd drinking cups.
